"A new moon teaches gradualness and deliberation, and how one gives birth to oneself slowly. Patience with small details makes perfect a large work, like the universe. What nine months of attention does for an embryo forty early mornings alone will do for your gradually growing wholeness." — Rumi
40 Early Mornings is autobiographical. I tell my story as a woman who feels free and empowered in her relationship to the Muslim faith. I share my story because it defies the cliche idea that all Muslim women are victims of an oppressive religion.
This self portrait consists of a book of the 99 names of Allah hand sewn into paper, a series of paper horses, a paper veil, a pair of pink high heels, rose scent, and audio recordings of Koranic verses (zekr) recited by a Muslim woman.
